What are the "Office Web Components" (OWC)?

OWC is technology which provides the connectivity to Microsoft Office. If you have MS Office XP installed on your computer, you have the Office Web Components support already implemented.

The Office Web Components is a package distributed by Microsoft as a freeware. It allows you to benefit from certain functions of Microsoft Office even if you do not have the Microsoft Office package installed on your machine. For example, thanks to the Office Web Components, you can read reports prepared in Microsoft Excel or Microsoft Access. The Office Web Components give you the read-only access to the MS Office reports. You can browse through your data, analyze them but you cannot change and save them.

EdiPax uses the functionality of these OWC in several applications. Especially, some report modules that accompany our certain products are using this technology.

Whether or not you need to have Office Web Components (or MS Office) installed on your machine, you can determine in the installation instructions for the specific product.

 OWC Frequently Asked Questions

Which version of the Office Web Components do I need?
You should install the latest Office Web Components, which is currently the OWC10.01.

Where can I obtain the Office Web Components?
You can download them at the Microsoft Office Downloads pages. For details see the Download Office Web Components section of this page.

Do I need to install Office Web Components when I have MS Office installed on my machine?
No, MS Office is enough, unless you are using an older version of Microsoft Office (97 or older). For certain functionalities, you may want to install the latest Office Web Components anyway, as they have been improved between versions 2000 and 2002 (XP).

Can I use EdiPax software even if I do not have the Office Web Components installed?
Yes and no. You might be able to install the EdiPax software but you will not be able to use certain functions the software was designed for - especially the report module. For example, you can install a client to download, convert and browse your EDIFACT orders but you will not be able to view statistics and reports on those orders.
